"Poppy"

Poppy (popaver rhoeas) flowers are best noted for Rememborance Day. But how did this come about? A French writer first made this connection during Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century, remarking that fields that were barren before battle expleded with the blood-red flowers after the battle.
Because of the tremendous bombardments of WWI the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing poppies to thrive. When the war ened, the lime was quickly absorbed and the poppy began to disappear again.
After John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields" was published in 1915, the poppy became a popular symbol for soldiers who dies in battle. By the 1920's this symbolism grew through-out North America.
Debbie's original was painted with Oil on Canvas and was 48"x48" in size.
